Chicken 1
On Friday, Aug. 6th we left Dawson City YT for Chicken, Alaska and then Tok. It had rained hard all night and was still raining and very foggy as we took the ferry across the Yukon River and headed up the long narrow and very foggy road towards Chicken.
We might have known there was going to be a problem because the road had been washed out by heavy rains about 10 days ago. But open for the past week. When we got to the border, the US Customs agent said he had heard they were going to close the road again but he had not had it confirmed. So we trucked on, past the exit to Eagle, where that road was marked closed.
Yesterday cars got through but today, the road had collapsed. They closed it about 10 minutes before we got there. You will see in the picture there is a workman standing on the far side of the road!
So we had to turn around and drive the 135 km back to Dawson where we had started 5 hours earlier! Bah! So we grabbed a quick bite at Dawson and headed south to Carmacks for the night.
