The critters are a herd of Javelinas (pronounced havelinas)- they look like pigs but are actually related to hippos. As we left Big Bend our intention was to go through Alpine (Texas) and then on to Fort Davis Mountain State Park. We stopped in Alpine to get groceries and luckily Susan and Rick caught up to us and told us that there was a wild fire just north of us that had destroyed a good part of Fort Davis and all the roads were closed. We passed by another fire, as we headed East to Fort Stockton, and heard later that Alpine was threatened as well.
