Lloydminster 2
Lloydminster is a town divided by the Alberta - Saskatchewan border. The orange pylons march down the side of the main north/south street. We camped at a campsite right in the town, and behind the Barr Centre - so we did a longish walk trying to figure out what the differences would be in prices. PST in Sask. but not Alberta, however the liquor was reportedly cheaper on the Sask. side.
We toured the Barr Colony Centre which was quite interesting - 1/3 art gallery, many paintings (some huge) done by Imhoff who did many religious paintings as well as nature and battle scenes - quite an extensive collection. Another third was closed due to flooding - heritage farm implements etc and then the final section was an old and odd collection of taxidermy, including a bizarre scene of rabbits posed as though they were at Alice's (in Wonderland) tea party. Finally in the back section, there was quite a detailed and "hands on" display regarding the heavy oil they have in the area and how it is processed and what it is used for. Really quite professionally done.
Finally we dashed over to the golf course and managed to get in 8.5 holes before the rains came. Laurie did exceptionally well with his rental clubs which made me all the more frustrated because I played poorly with my favorites brought from home! Humbug!
Albertans tell us they have never seen such a wet summer - many of the campsites are soggy, the mosquitoes in some areas are fierce, and often the farmers can't get into their fields to manage their crops.
